A lone seed ship, the Sidonia, plies the void, ten centuries since the obliteration of the solar system. The massive, nearly indestructible, yet barely sentient alien life forms that destroyed humanity’s home world continue to pose an existential threat.
Nagate Tanikaze has only known life in the vessel’s bowels deep below the sparkling strata where humans have achieved photosynthesis and new genders. Not long after he emerges from the Underground, however, the youth is bequeathed a treasured legacy by the spaceship’s coolheaded female captain.

OK, let's clear up some things first. Yes, the series uses CG and the characters can look incredibly awkward at times. Yes, the frame rate during the televised broadcast jumped around like a 6 year old laptop trying to play a Playstation 4 game. Yes, Knights of Sidonia shares a lot of ideas with Attack on Titan (though Knights' manga started 5 months before AoT's did, and honestly both curbed influences from Muvluv Alternative and Starship Troopers, though that's a subject for another time). Any of these points would probably sink most series but here's the kicker: as of the end of the 2014 Spring anime season Knights of Sidonia is the best televised mecha series to come along since Gurren Lagann. There, I said it.
