Metro Toronto Convention Centre
Toronto, Ontario
August 26th to 26th, 2005
I finally found the time to process what pictures I had of most of the con. Sorry for the delay. Work and getting paid is more important considering how much I spent at this con. :) Nice part is I manage to compose some reports this time right off the bat as oppose leaving for a much later date.
I like to thank everyone who cosplayed, whether I took your picture or not. You rock!
As with everyone, I have taken a picture of ... you can use YOUR picture on your site. If you do not wish your picture on this site, please email. For the most part I only had one person who did not want her picture on the site. The picture was deleted right at the con.
Another year and C,N, Anime is upon us again. After a long hot summer, I'm looking forward to this convention. Like last year, I'll be hovering around the Artist's Alley running another 4 koma Project with the hopes of enough 4 koma strips to fill a poster. I'll have copies of last year's 4 komas on a poster as well from other events.Supplies are very limited.
As announced before, I've stopped making cosplay posters. It was an experiment which has done well but time to move on. I'll be concentrating on my own projects this fall. That includes some projects including Bento Otaku section. Another is cosplay .. the next big thing? Well, we'll have to see if my idea turns out.
See ya there....
First off, my apologies for some pictures being duplicates. I been taking multiple pictures of the sme subjects for a while. Mostly due to difficulties with digital cameras not gaurenteed to get a picture even though the digital display says otherswise. If you look at the tumbnail which represents the LCD display on a camera to what I actually got. You'll understand why professionals take massive amounts of pictures at a photo shoot. Still the SD300 has 'focusing issues' under some conditions. Main problem is it's small lens by which it focuses. Sad to say, even with multiple pictures, some aren't up to snuff. Still I post them rather than no pictures at all.
The CBC lockout was apparent anywhere you were outside the convention. From people walking the picket while heading to Tim Hortons for coffee to heading to and from the subway station. I grew up with CBC before the onslaught of the 500 channel universe and nothing to watch. I just hope that it will end soon.
Speaking of outside, alot of people were outisde. Either to smoke or to catch a bite to eat from one of the chip wagons on Front Street.

Even here there was lineups. It seems the better or closest chip wagon
was the longest. I prefered it because the staff is always boyant
and happy. Tired from the con? Short time at Bozos helped picked things
up. How can I explain? Just ask any stormtrooper who was sitting in the
area. :)

While the show ended poorly, I thought the cast tried their best. Still I feel it will be a long time before I will bother watching Trek again. |

Simply Ghastly_Uncle Ghastly No doubt this years surprise artist was Uncle Ghastly. As in the relative your family nevers talks about. ;) His classic pipe which he carved himself reminded me of BOB, the 50's illustration of the perfect dad. His humour while in anime form is nothing of the conventional. Of course, what was I thinking when I asked Uncle Ghastly to start 4 koma using the word, Kamikaze? I still don't know. Still if you're crazy enough to visit Uncle Ghastly, don't say I warned you or that I sent you. |
Line up on Sunday was long but not near as bad as Friday nor Saturday.

I cleared up nearly all the 4 koma panels except for 2 unfinished strips from the ones sent from Japan. I also cleared up buying of stuff like ninja socks and sandals I haven't worn sandals in years so it will take a bit to get use to once again. I left most of my spending on artwork.
I have been planning to by more PVC figs but that is for another project with a miniture tea house. Until I decide on a scale for the minitures and building, buying more will only add to the clutter of my apartment. What other stuff I did buy was added to another failed project, the Vertical Garden, which only water bamboo still grows. I might resurrect it as another project at a later date.
For three days, the artist alley was alife unto it's own. Many of the people who had tables had little chance to see much of the con except for the mirads of people filing pass. Some dressed up. Others spent far too many hours explaining their works over and over again to potential buyers. I spent many hours running 4 koma project at this con than any other but I think it was time and money well spent. It was a chance for artists to see other artist's works ... even if they never got to meet the artist themselves. Sadly there was no real event for them. They, themselves, are an event unto themselves that many con goers simply pass up or simply don't care. I hope those reading this will take the time to see some art ... maybe pick up some art ... get a sketch. In Japan, these events called 'ketto' are numerous. However in Japan, cons like this one don't exsist where you meet performers and such. SO next convention, take the best of both worlds and visit the artist alley. I'm sure they will appreciate it.

As the show ended people still milled about on the lower level.

Lessons in photography
End of the day and everyone is leaving. I managed to catch this couple on the way out. I took several shots since it simply didn't matter anymore. Still there are lessons to be learn from these final pictures. First one is great pose but the light from the window washes out the picture as the camera tries to compensate. In short, the camera is standing in the shadow of the two subjects. Second shot adds some shadows and depth as the subects and camera were moved merely 90 degrees fom where they were standing.Still there is too much backgroupnd clutter. Third shot is zoom a little tighter plus I simply move one step left. The subjects are evenly framed and a much nicer shot than I started with. |
Finally got home around 10:30 pm Sunday. I've manage to make a backup CD of everything I took at the con before proceeding with editing and posting. I hope to start going through the pictures tomorrow night.
I also must make some apologies. I had no ticket to get into the masquerade this year. It would have been nice to find this out before getting into the line. I did manage to take as many pictures as possible in the hallways after the show. You think they would have done a better job of this but as late things have been run down. This is the first masquerade I've EVER been shut out of for nearly 20 years. I hope this isn't a sign of the times as such will kill attendance as more and more people get left out. It leaves a bad impression on con goers no matter how much you cover your butt on it.
This year was a really large artist's alley which made it difficult to find people. I literally spent 2 days searching for one person. It was also record number of 4 komas for a con. I hope you all come back to see their art and visit their websites. Also some groups have picked up on the idea of 4 panel comic jam. Expect to see more this Japanese style spreading across the net.

I trying to get as much up as possible. Composing each day as I can process. With these cons being on the end of month, I don't have much spare time after a con because of work. I do have pictures of costumes after the masquerade but that can wait.
Finally with some time off work that you think I would find time to get the final batch of pictures put up. No. Well finally, they are up along with no-masquerade report. Of course,I still have to put up soemthing for Friday's report. We all know that won't be long. right? :P
