Masquerade - Saturday, May 28th, 2005

No tickie No watchie

Sorry.

If you wish to skip the report, head to gallery.

_

While in the line-up, I spotted some old faces from this and other cons. The one thing about these conventions is meeting those people again that you might only see once or twice a year.

After finding myself shut out of the masquerade due to fine print. I did meet up with some comic jam artists from Kitchener-Waterloo area, who were impressed with the 4 koma project in spite that I typoed 'repspectively' wrong on bottom of some of the blank sheets. I found out later that the program I used to create the sheets won't spell check footers nor headers.

Go East on West

_
I headed to EAST on Queen Street west for a bite to eat.

Once again I sat at East on Queens Street West. Not by choice. The cute serving girl from the night before was still working though she said she was going Sunday morning before work to the con. Without thinking I gave her my program book so she could make best use of her time. In my error since I wasn't able to get another one the next day. :(

Tale of two photos

_

These two photos give some clues on 'how to' and 'how not to' take photos. The one on the left is with flash and the right is without. Obviously the one on the left is better. The problem is the mixed lighting in the area being cross between fluorescent bulbs and incandescent makes getting a 'white balance' from digital cameras perspective, Hell.

White Balance is camera deciding what white really is under different coloured lighting. We don't see it because our minds automatically 'white balance' things. Page is white but under florescent is off green. Incandescent is red. Halogen lighting made my old Nova DC-2L digital camera see bright yellow.

You notice in that the background changed. Less busy background means people don't blur as they walk by. While flash might be deplored by cosplayers, here it is a necessary evil as the flash gives an even colour balance by 'filling' in the light.

I also like to note about camera etiquette. I declared to the girls that I was using flash so they would be prepared

A word about those guys...

Conrad and gang.

Since I missed the masquerade, I have no reference to what happened with Conrad's performance. From the tone, nothing good. I've commented on Conrad's performances in the past. Unfortunately I didn't post comments yet on Animenorth performance. It would have dealt with props and costumes. Also some stage direction.

For the most part, I'm impressed that no matter how bad Conrad's productions are, he is more than willing to take constructive criticism on how to make them better. In fact, he takes criticism better than 'adults' as I found. He feels he's pushing the envelope but as far as some people are concern, it more like luck.

What surprises me more than anything that he can take being 'booed' and still come back and try again. For most people, even professionals, this would be devastating to themselves and their career. Still Conrad dust himself off and with what little constructive comments, tries again.

Simply Conrad lack direction and a director. Someone that will take the audience view and express what needs to be changed before hitting the stage. With that and a little more time planning with some stagecraft (check the library on this subject) and better costumes, I think that Conrad and friends could cut the noise in the skit, they would do better.

The boy has talent...
*VIDEO^

While this video might be a common sight in raves, it was the first time I had seen such a display. One co-worker exclaimed (in Foghorn's voice) "I say, I say, the boy has talent." Still the display by this guy and his friend made up for not seeing the masquerade. I can imagine seeing this routine to Tsubasa Chronicles song, 'Ship of Fools'.  It did leave me with some ideas how this could translate into a stage performance.

Now to the gallery.
