It’s finally that time of year again!
Time for another picnic!

We’ll do what we did last year- attack a grassy knoll near Centreville, park ourselves down and worry the surrounding people, and relax under the shade of many trees. From there, people can socialize, run off to the nearby gardens and fountains for photos, and snag a few Centreville rides. People who are late can find us easily, and there’s less worry about travel for those who can’t wear appropriate footwear.

The Third Annual Centre Island Cosplay Picnic!
When: JULY 29th 2006!
RAINDATE: JULY 30th 2006
This date DOES coincide with the CLAMP Photoshoot. Due to there being fewer and fewer available weekends in July, Edgar and I agreed it work well to combine our group outings. So this way, you can attend both- the CLAMPers will have lots of people to hang with, and if you don’t have a CLAMP costume you can come all decked out and enjoy yourself anyway!
Where:
Centre Island and Ward’s Island (they’re connected). This includes the gardens, beaches, and Centreville. We can walk through Centreville without buying a pass, for those worried about money. ^^ And there is a petting zoo, filled with cute animals! And DUCKS!.
We are meeting at the docks, BEFORE you buy a ticket and enter to get on the ferry.
We are meeting in front of the building that says “Ferry Docks”. That’s at the Toronto Ferry Docks at Bay Street and Queens Quay. Before the docks there are a few grassy knolls and trees, as well as a ticket booth that’s normally not in use. I will be there early, and will poke you if you are in costume (no idea what I’m wearing ATM). We will depart from there at 11am. If you’re late, hop on the ferry and head towards Centreville. Well take over a bunch of shaded areas and set up camp. (It’ll be hard to miss us.) If you know you will be late contact me and I will arrange phone contact numbers. Writerz_bloc@yahoo.ca
Cost:
Ferry Cost is $3.50 for Students under 19 with a student card. 6.00 for Adults. Children are $2.50. That includes the ride there and back.
Additional Stuff:
Cosplay is NOT a requirement! Everyone is welcome!
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY YOU BRING A REPLICA WEAPON. No guns. No swords made of metal (Plastic and wood is cool) nothing that could CONSTITUTE a threat. We don’t want to get kicked out, obviously, and while we want to amuse the genal public, making them report us to the security would be bad, yes?
Keyblades, staffs, thunder hammers, kunai and the like are all welcome!
Extras:
There are snack bars throughout the island, fast food places within Centreville, and other areas in which you can spend money. HOWEVER- you can bring your own food and drinks, and not expect to pay anything other than the ferry fee.
Centreville passes are:
Individual ride pass:
Over 4′ tall: $23.00
Children 4′ and under: $16.50
Though you don’t have to buy a pass to explore Centreville itself and you can buy single tickets as well.
The Ferry will run from 8:00 am to 11:45 pm Saturday. The Picnic is expected to run from 11 am to 6:30 – 7 pm. Centreville closes at 5 pm.
Food:
Although this is being labelled as a picnic, it’s not a potluck. Bringing enough food for even 15 to 20 people can be a hassle, and tastes can be an issue as well. We’re looking at 50+ attendees, easily. Not to mention the fact no one wants to lug their food all the way to and around the island, and then lug their empty containers around with them for the rest of the day. Bring food and drinks for yourself. ^^
HOWEVER:
Blankets, beach balls, and random, shareable foodstuffs are always welcome. If there’s something you make that you want to share with the rest of us- by ALL means, do so! Just be aware that bringing food is not a requirement. And if you have something you think will add to the fun- bring it!
Safety:
Bring SUNSCREEN. No one likes being burnt, and you will. DON’T MAKE ME TELL YOU OF THE BURN I GOT LAST YEAR. IT MAKES ME CRY!
Try not to wear a costume that’s incredibly delicate, or has too many layers. Especially if it’s all synthetic fibres, it’s easy to overheat. As well, being on an island means a COOL breeze and a significant drop in temperature at night. If you’re planning a bikini costume – bring a jacket.
If you’ve lived under a rock all your life, do NOT plan on swimming. Specifically in Lake Ontario. Unless you LIKE being neon green.
And additionally: if you plan to go on the swans in Centreville, bring a towel.
Photos:
This is a very loose photoshoot- there will be people there with cameras to take photos, many of whom are semi-professional (or at least darned good) So all you have to do is ASK. However, the emphasis of this is to cosplay and have fun, so there won’t be any more specific “Ok, now YOUR turn” phototaking. Therefore, it’s not necessary to have your photo taken (save for the giant group shots of doom) and if you want some nice shots of you outdoors and without brutal yellow indoor lighting, just ask the people with the cameras!
Directions:
The Toronto Ferry Docks is located at the foot of Bay Street and Queens Quay, just West of the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel.

From Union Station take the 509 Harbourfront or the 510 Spadina streetcar south to the Bay and Queen’s Quay Stop.
Alternately, take the Bay Bus #6 southbound from the corner of Front and Bay to the Bay and Queen’s Quay stop.
Really Alternately, exit Union onto Bay Street and walk South to Queens Quay. (it’s a short walk, about 10-15 minutes)
The entrance to the ferry docks is on the south side of the street, just east of the Westin Harbour Castle hotel. There’s a large, glowing, blinking sign that will advertise the island. It’s hard to miss.
I don’t drive, so these directions I can do little with (they’re from the website).
I honestly suggest taking the TTC. It’s easier, and considering how difficult parking downtown is, never mind how expensive, it really is the better route.
Walk / Drive
Main entrance at foot of Bay St on Queens Quay. Enter through park and enter via walkway between Harbour Castle Westin Hotel and Harbour Castle condominiums. Parking is available 1 block north at Lakeshore and Bay, 1 block west on Queens Quay between Bay and York Sts, 1 block east opposite Toronto Star building adjacent to Captain Johns restaurant.

Other Points:
There will NOT be any BBQ or Fire at this picnic, for 2 reasons. Firstly, costumes and wigs do not do well next to open fire sources, and open flames around a group of hyper teens is normally a bad plan to start with.
Secondly, it requires a $53 dollar permit.
SO: PLAN TO ATTEND? GOOD!
Practice should make perfect. In this case, it might make alot more.
Every year, you can find myself along with thousands of others at the Home County Folk Festival. What is aa guy who goes to anime conventions doing at a folk festival? One for food. Some of the best food around.
Two is the craftwork. Sadly over the years, alot of those who I use to know no longer are at Home County. But this year, Muma Harps has been a main stay for years and they have an artist, Jennifer White, who performs at their booth. While videotaping her performance, we talked about YouTube and my adventures of videotaping and photograhy at cons. I was able to download my footage and put to DVD for them as well as leave them a copy of my raw AVIs.
During the weekend, I found a strap for my tripod making it easier to carry all day. I took over 3 tapes full of footage, lots of concert and workshop performances. I manage not only to get permission to post on YouTube but also I got the performers websites so those viewing them would be able to find their sites.
I even made a DVD for one artist, Chris Whiteley. Along with his brother Ken Whiteley, I taped other artists like, The Rizdales, Swamperella, Great Uncles of the Revolution, and what has to be the wildest performance of Spiderman theme song, the PolyJesters.
Since not all my videoworks are cosplay or even remotely related to anime, I have a seperate account on YouTube. Check out MichaelEh on YouTube and see what I do when there isn’t cosplayers around.
If that wasn’t enough, there might be a chance to help out in regular vblog about folk musicians. For me, Practice doesn’t just make perfect. It makes opportunities.
So get out there and practice.

As weird as it looks, someone has come up with USB flash keys in your favorite Asian foods.
This only begs to say when some otaku will eat one of these flash drives or more likely try plugging real food into the computer ports.

Being summer everything is slow. Including my posts. On top of that the forum on Jade Cafe have gone until the sysop can bring it back. Until then, I will be setting up temporary forums once I get the email verfication fixed.

July being a month for festivals in London. I take the opportunity to go out and practice taking pictures. Sadly I missed the photoshoot in High Park early this month due to sudden sickness with my mother. (Yes she’s doing better.)
One of the events I got to every year is Stan C. Reade’s Photoday. It is a wonder event held every year out at the Windemere Estate where a local camera store brings in models and music as well as large number of vendors from alot of camera companies.
At Sunfest, I met one of the regulars at anime cons. He was working the Blades 4 You booth.

TTC - Take the Bloor/Danforth subway line to High Park station and walk south through High Park (approximately 20 minute walk). Or, take the 501 streetcar (Humber/Long Branch) to Colborne Lodge Drive and walk a short distance up the road to the Lodge. By car:
From the west – Take The Queensway eastbound to Colborne Lodge Drive at the south entrance to High Park, turn north (left). Colborne Lodge is about 200 m up the hill immediately on the right-hand side of the road. Or, you can access the Lodge by going eastbound on Bloor Street West to the north entrance to High Park.
From the east – Take Lake Shore Boulevard West westbound to Colborne Lodge Drive. Turn north (right) and follow roadway into High Park. The Lodge is at the top of the hill on the right -hand side of the road approximately 200 m from the entrance to the park.
