February 2006

Review28 Feb 2006 12:16 am

With the back exhaust fan winterized, the room was reasonably warm compared to last meeting.
With a good turn out, we reviewed Ginban Kaleidoscope just one day after the 2006 Winter Olympics closed. While it was sports comedy, it was interesting to see how a Japanese anime handles a Canadian character. Most were impressed.

I stopped by the Underground where we hold our anime meetings to do some courtesy cleaning of the place and take out the trash for the upstair staff. The Underground has always changes with the climate and winter is no different. It’s cold down there. Today, I found out why.

While doing customary checks of the exits I noticed a rather large opening above the rear exit. It was an exhaust fan but also it was open to the elements letting warm air out and freezing cold in. Further inspection with the store owner comfirmed that the opening was never winterized. No wonder it was freezing cold. BRRRR!
Hopefully Wednesday, the opening will be sealed as it should have been last fall. Adding much needed heat and lower heating costs to the owner. Not to mention more comfy warmth for the patrons for L.A. Mood and comfort for all the groups using the Underground. I’m surprised that no one has noticed it before.

PowerPower Card Game

Sometime ago I had bought this Nekomimi (werecat) fighting game in hopes of learning enough Japanese to learn how to play it (or at least write comprehensive article on it.) Time marches on and not even POPLS support this game anymore on their website.

What I have found is you raise a nekomimi from infant to catwomanhood through many trails. Usually brought onto by the other player. There is green Territory cards, Blue Events cards, Pink Item cards, Orange Fight cards, Red cards that look like disadvatange cards and a single Yellow Talent card.

There are 5 token cards to represent your nekomimi in various stages during the game. Each card gives advantages or disadvantages to the advancement of your nekomimi.

I still like the art with the deck including the fact that one of the artists TRUMP also did started one of the 4 koma panels, Ronin.

If you are lucky to find any cards to Power Power ver. 2 Second Edition, I envy you. Especially if you manage to get a copy of Ver. 1 which was only sold at Komiket. More PowerPower to nyan!

My view Feb. 17th 2006

Sad to say this is the view from my living room. It’s not much more without the curtains. My apartment window has beautiful view of the driveway. Unless you like people walking by looking in, a heavy curtain was all I could come up with.

The window is rather large. Nearly 7.5 feet wide by 41 inches in height. With landlord finally getting around to painting and redoing the floor, it has me deciding to do a extreme makeover to the whole apartment.

So what can you do with a window you can’t really have open view? For one, make one.

The window has 5 inch depth. So instead of blinds, I thought of doors. More precisely Japanese style paper panels. If I set a major panel against the window and two sliding panels on each side, it might actually look cool.

With the 5 inch space opening I could suspend acryllic shelves with wires and place some anime figs in a display format. Hmm…

Maybe then my view wouldn’t suck so bad eh?

A spoke with my webhost about the current situation with some taking .com of our club name and to see what could be done. He found out that they also registered .net but not .org. I asked if he could register www.animelondon.org for us. With some difficulty, he not only got the .org but also linked it so all email and link work the same for both names, www.animelondon.ca and www.animelondon.org.

That does mean two for two and at least that makes me happy that at least two of four animelondon urls are commercial free. :)

It looks like Anime London has been highjacked. Well in the case, of url www.animelondon.com. Some British version of Hobbystar has decided to use ‘Anime London’ as the name of their con in July. I just wish we could put on a con like this.

I’ve asked for either a change in URL so it is more clearer or simply something saying they’re not the Canadian site. Sigh.

On the other side, someone ‘jacked Anime North’s site by using the .ca instead of www.animenorth.com. Go fig.

Well, working with WordPress was easy. Sad to say that this spells an end to news section of the site. It was and is still one of the top ten entry URLs on this site but always a pain to update. I’ve yet to integrate http://blog.animelondon.ca/ or http://www.animelondon.ca/blog/ into the site menus since that would take a lot of changes. I might use redirection to make sure people see the changes. I’ve already added an events calendar onto the blog. Expect more tweaking as I try to see how much I can integrate the blogging software to the rest of the website.

Other news, apparently a British convention is using the name ‘Anime London’ to redirect people to their con overseas. Please remember it’s http://www.animelondon.ca/. I’ve already sent an email to see if something can’t be worked out. It looks like a good con. Too bad it’s half a world away and on the same time as Anime North.
Side note: Someone else has decided to highjack Anime North’s name for some online store on .CA. Remember it’s http://www.animenorth.com/ for the correct URL.

As I was cleaning out a cupboard, I found my old air popper. Still working, I decided to use it at the anime meetings. Along with some popcorn flavourings, Butter Salt, BBQ & Cool Ranch.
(Not to mention cut down cut down on waste of regular snack packaging.)

While the popcorn is free, it’s still 75 cents for pop. The popper will only operate before the first show starts and during the break so bring your own bowls.

UPDATE! Two more flavours have been added. Bacon Hickoy and Sour Cream and Chives.

“Everyone loves a blog…

It’s big and full of words…

It’s a blog… “

It seems today everyone has a blog, including pigeons. So why did it take Anime London so long to get one? Well finding the right software since I code most of the pages myself. Mostly news covered most of the news worthy stuff. Considering it’s one the top pages on the site justifies it’s exsistance. It’s just keeping the rest of the sites contents up to date has been a chore.

Hopefully I can add more content and draw attention to new content when it’s added to the website in general.

Also several sections were left lacking due to neglect. bento OTAKU section hasn’t been updated for a year. I was planning random Cosplay pics. Other new sections like podcasting and con reports from my cellphone. Posts I have written elsewhere.
It might take a bit but it’s a learning experience. Not to meantion that the content remains on Anime London website with no ads. After all, …
