Paradise Toronto Comicon
National Trade Centre, Hall C
Exhibition Place, Toronto, Ontario
April 29th 2006

__

I must have passed these gates several times on Saturday alone. My bus passed by it heading to the terminal. I could have got out but I needed to get a few things downtown like coffee and more subway tokens before heading to Exhibition Place via TTC from Front Street. After I got in, I immediately saw the large display for upcoming X-Men movie with large cardboard display and Harley-Davidson X-Men edition bike.

I made my way through the dealer's section to Artist Alley which was very vibrate and alive.

Most of my day is taken by trying to remember who has which 4 koma. Even having just three strips on the go at once can be maddening. You think with all the tech I carry, I'll use it to keep track of it all. Even afterward, I guessing at some of the artist photos here. Even with sound memo on the one camera, I hardly use it.

Dead End - Dead Center

Roller girls of Dead End 56 booth

I was greeted by one of the girls who was roller skating around promoting Dead End 56, artist, Andy B. Andy has done couple of 4 komas including second panel of Betrayal.

I must admit having a cool car on trade show floor was incredible was of replacing the table with car trunk. It would not be the only innovation at the show.

Another 4 koma regular, Chip Zdarsky of Prison Funnies along with several other artists who have done 4 koma like Kagan McLeod of Infinite Kung Fu decked out their area as basement apartment. Their books being on a large coffee tables surrounded by couches. For those of us, who stock the Artist Alley, this virtual fan trap is welcome addition

Dance Dance Utena! (Video clip)

There was a Dance Dance Revolution machine at the event.  What was funny was seeing people cosplaying from Revolutionary Girl Utena playing it.

One table is the dealers section caught my eye was group that did large scale casting. The problem is I can't find their card. :(

Honest ... Ed?!
__

One thing I didn't expect to find was Ed the Sock at a comic con  but then he was there plugging his very own comic. What was more amazing was he took time to talk to a little girl who was playing pirate. While we associate Ed the Sock with his late night nudge-nudge wink-wink humour, he changed gears for someone who may never be allowed to stay up late enough to watch his show. I have met Ed personally and I must say that the real person is total opposite to his on-air persona.

Now available!

I ended up loosing a chance to finish Betrayal at this con but no doubt there will be other chances this summer.

End of day from the video room

I went back up stairs to check out what was playing in the video room. Some shorts were shown as well as Fanta-Size. A project by one of the anime guests. I headed out and home though I just missed the 8:30 bus for London and had to wait until 10:30.

All in all, this year's event was milestone and a vast improvement over last years event. Hopefully some of the bugs for next year can be worked out and a more solid anime program. Clearly they need to advertise more to where the anime crowd meet. It definitely wasn't like Con no Baka but then Con no Baka didn't have a comic con that has been running for a while to offset any problems.

I'll be going next year.
