Fan Appreciation Event
Metro Toronto Convention Centre
April 24th 2005

This was the second event driven challenge for the 4 Koma Project. being only an 6 hour event I wasn't expecting the sheer amount of 'art' for so little time. Even still four complete 4 koma strips were completed. Truly a feat by any standards.

So what is an anime guy doing at a comic con? Well, since I love to challenge artist, it was a chance to get out of town and see what other cons are doing.  Frankly it was a freebie ... for those from Toronto. It still cost myself return fare to and from Toronto. I bought my ticket in advance to save money. On Sunday morning, I realized I was going to be late for the bus. The next bus wouldhave put me another 2 hours late as oppose to be at the con fasionably early. After getting a cab, I had barely enough time to grab a coffee across the street before boarding.

Line up just before 11pm

Having been to past comic con by Hobbystar. This was definitely a massive overhaul of their one day comic con I had visited ove a year ago in the fall..  Larger room, better varitiy of dealers with wares that didn't seem to clash. Multitude of guests and artists.

Plus while there was no anime or manga guests, it didn't mean there wasn't deals on manga. Beguiling had selected manga tradebacks for insane price of 3 or 5 dollars a piece. This 'deal' made it possible to allow a reading section for Manga Jam. For those who missed it, sorry.
I bought a pile of books.

Artist ally had a few empty tables.

The Artist Alley ws as large as main Comic Expo yet it was under populated.  I assume as this new format builds, more will come out to it.

The 4 project went well. Though at times, I found myself  trying to remember which persons had which 4 komas. I was surprised on how well it has been accepted. Still some artist wanted to do it for the fun of it. I know that it's alot of work drawing. In return for those people bought some of their books or stuff. Ash Illustrations 'Anger Management' button was awesome. His bookmarks inspired making my own to promote Manga Jam.  Some of the arist's stuff bought here and the other comic con will be at the Jam for others to read. Benjimin River's empty words has caught the eye of comic retailers here in London.

Wheels on the bus go...

_

Ad firm had an impress display of bus full of wax maniquins and lage inflated archway against the backway. Obviously this was best place to promote the 'Batman Begins' movie as well as 'House of Wax.'

There was also a TV with trailers to both along with Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. Done in the same style and animation as 'Nightmare before Christmas'. Slated for October this year, I'm already wanting to get tickets for this movie.

I manage at the end of the day to talk to some of people whoi worked on the vechicles. They had spent all night finishing air brushing the bus and Hummer Jeep. Fairly impressive job consider their main drive is stuff like the large archway poster created on extremely wide format ink printers.  It was nice to talk to artists in the real world of using their art skills in the work place.  Plus they were as interested on how people felt about their display.

Another loooong walk back from the South Hall. By the time I had got a coffee, I had little time but to climb back on the bus heading home. I was spent far too much at this con on manga books and art commissions. I manage to get back home approxiately 12 hours since I left. I was broke but 'happily broke.'

See ya next time....
